Malmo: A Modular Table for Functionality and Aesthetics

Combining Ergonomics and Storage for Versatile Use

Designing the Malmo table, Liubov Borisovskaia and Olga Shchukina aimed to create a piece that seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics. Inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, the Malmo table offers a solution that expands the variability of users managing its structure with useful functions, such as adjustable height and customizable drawers. This makes the table a long-term investment in interior design, aligning with principles of sustainability.

The Malmo table stands out with its unique combination of ergonomics and storage functions, catering to the diverse needs of both children and adults. The table features a base frame with a connecting shelf that can accommodate either a children's tabletop or an adult-sized one. The tabletop itself is designed with rich accessories, making it the perfect companion for children's creativity.

One of the standout features of the Malmo table is its deep work surface, allowing users to place numerous items, including small plants. Additionally, the table top includes a hole for wires, ensuring a clutter-free workspace. The table's design takes into account the practicality of modern living, offering a solution that is both functional and visually appealing.

The Malmo table is crafted from high-strength ash wood, with the frame treated with Saicos oil and wax for enhanced naturalness. The tabletop, shelf, and drawers are coated with Sayerlack enamel, providing a soft, durable, and non-fading texture. The drawers are equipped with hidden Blum Bluemotion full extension slides, ensuring smooth and effortless operation.

Measuring (1200/ 1500/ 1800) x 700 x (600/ 760) mm, the Malmo table is available in various sizes to suit different spaces and needs. Its versatility extends to the countertop, which can be extended on the front and sides, allowing the table to be placed against a wall with a radiator or even in front of a window.

For additional storage, the table comes with a 150 mm high shelf, perfect for a small printer or books. Users can also choose to install a half cassette with a drawer or a full chest of drawers with three drawers on the shelf. With three types of countertop finishes and seven standard colors for the drawers, the Malmo table offers endless possibilities to create a set that complements any modern interior color scheme.

The Malmo table project started in March 2020 and was completed in July 2022 in Saint-Petersburg. Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges in fine-tuning the frame parts to strike a balance between aesthetic lightness and functionality. They also focused on optimizing the ergonomics of the connecting shelf under the tabletop, considering its height and shape.

The Malmo table's design allows for boundless imagination at any age, breaking free from the constraints of traditional tables in both function and appearance. Its versatile and multifunctional nature, combined with the use of noble solid wood and ash veneer, makes it a durable and timeless piece of furniture suitable for various settings, from offices to living rooms and children's rooms.

The Malmo table has been recognized for its exceptional design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Malmo table stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
